NEW HAMPSHIRE — A “pi in the sky” lunar eclipse event — a mathematics lesson and a “blood moon” skywatching extravaganza — is teeing up in the Granite State late Thursday night and early Friday morning.
It’s a nerdy but delightful coincidence that a significant portion of the eclipse will take place on Pi Day, which is celebrated annually on March 14. This day honors the mathematical constant pi (π), which plays a crucial role in astronomical calculations. March 14 is referred to as Pi Day because the date is often written as 3/14, aligning with the first few digits of pi (3.14).
Pi is used to calculate things like the circumference of a circle or the volume of a sphere. In a real-world application, NASA scientists use pi to predict the path of the eclipse and the duration of totality with greater accuracy.
Assuming sky conditions permit it in New Hampshire, we’ll see 65 minutes of totality, starting at 2:26 a.m. local time. The National Weather Service forecasts mostly cloudy skies overnight Thursday and Friday.
In a total lunar eclipse, the moon moves into the inner part of Earth’s shadow, or umbra, bathing the moon in darkness. According to NASA, some of the sunlight passing through our planet’s atmosphere reaches the moon’s surface, giving it a crimson red “blood” color.

To calculate totality, NASA scientists incorporate pi into complex mathematical models that account for the circular geometry of Earth and its moon. This allows them to precisely determine the moment the moon is fully covered by Earth’s shadow during a lunar eclipse, essentially using pi to calculate the circumference of Earth’s shadow and its alignment with the moon’s path through it.
Granite Staters, all of North America, in fact, will be able to see it from start to finish. Here’s what to expect, according to NASA:
Penumbral phase: The moon enters Earth’s fuzzy outer shadow and loses brightness. This phase lasts from 11:57 p.m. EDT on March 13 until 1:09 a.m. on the 14th.
Partial phase: The moon begins to enter Earth’s darker umbral shadow and begins to turn red from 1:09 a.m. to 2:26 a.m.
Totality: The entire moon is within Earth’s shadow from 2:26 a.m. to 3:31 a.m.
Partial phase: The spectacle reverses with another partial phase from 3:31 a.m. to 4:47 a.m.
Penumbral phase: From 4:47 a.m. to 6 a.m., the moon will exit Earth’s shadow.
The space agency’s scientists and engineers use pi in multiple other ways, including planet exploration. The NASA Pi Day Challenge includes a riddle that can only be solved using the mathematical constant and other educational resources.
NASA uses pi extensively to calculate the trajectories for space exploration, including in missions that send spacecraft to other planets, drive rovers on Mars, and determine what planets are made of and the depth of alien oceans.

CONCORD, NH — Exeter, Hampton, and Londonderry educators have been named state finalists for the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The teachers — Jessica Girvan, a science teacher at Londonderry High School in Londonderry; Brian Gray, a computer science and technology teacher at Hampton Academy; Govan Baird, a science teacher at Exeter High School; and Michael Shore, a mathematics teacher at Exeter High School in Exeter, will all move forward to the national level. There, they will be eligible to receive the national award, the highest honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science educators.
“State finalists embody the very best of New Hampshire’s educators,” Commissioner Frank Edelblut of the New Hampshire Department of Education said, “serving as both role models and sources of inspiration for their students and colleagues. These four exceptional teachers understand the importance of engaging and innovative instruction, and we celebrate their well-earned recognition and dedication to STEM education.”
The New Hampshire Department of Education noted Thursday that Gray was also a finalist for the 2025 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year.
Each national awardee receives a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and an all-expenses-paid trip to an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. The department said the awardees will also join a national cohort of award-winning teachers, providing opportunities to impact teaching on a state and national scale.

Students at Londonderry High School were released early Friday because of concerns over structural issues with the gym roof.
Some students told News 9 that a staged dismissal started at about 11:45 a.m., and students were told not to drive on the road behind the gym.
Superintendent Dan Black sent a letter Friday afternoon saying that the rubber membrane on the roof had come loose and needs to be repaired. He said a roofing company is going to assess the roof over the weekend.
Black told News 9 that some people were in the gym when the rubber membrane started coming loose. He said there was likely a tear in the material, allowing the strong, gusty winds to get under it and damage it.
"It's not a normal sound to have wind just rushing between the rubber membrane and the roof, so I think everyone was kind of worried what was going on, so we got all the students and staff out of the gym and back into the main building," he said.
Black said there were no concerns about the roof before the winds kicked up because the gym is a newer building. When the fire department arrived, first responders immediately recognized the potential safety hazards, and the decision was made to dismiss the students.
Black said all students were dismissed safely.
The superintendent said there's usually after-school programs and practices Friday afternoon, but other nearby schools were able to host some of the students.

LONDONDERRY, N.H. —
If you need to register to vote on Town Meeting Day, there are some changes you should know about because of a new law that requires proof of citizenship to register in New Hampshire.
For the first time, New Hampshire residents will need to show documents proving their citizenship and identity before registering to vote on Tuesday.
The new law went into effect after the November election.
"I just noticed one of our seniors coming in to register to vote, and as I was passing her, she said, 'Oh, I hope I have all of my paperwork,'" said Londonderry Town Clerk Sherry Farrell.

Local elections will be the first chance for the new law to play out.
"This is going to apply mainly to those individuals who are going to be first-time voters and need to register to vote," said Secretary of State David Scanlan.
Before the law went into effect, people registering at the polls could sign an affidavit saying they were a citizen and old enough to vote. Under the new law, a new voter needs to provide proof of identity, citizenship and domicile in order to register.

Farrell said it's a process everyone is learning together.
"It would have been very difficult to implement something like this on such a large election scale, so it's great that we're going to get this trial the first run-through on a smaller election scale," she said.
Officials are recommending that Granite Staters register before Election Day.
"If you're going to engage in that process, just make sure that you've taken all the steps you need to be able to exercise your precious right to vote," Scanlan said.
The changes don't apply to anyone who is already registered to vote, even for those who have recently moved.
